A former President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, Mustapha Amego
Notable Nigerian music legends and showbiz practitioners have started paying tributes to the late 90s Showbiz personality, Mustapha Amego, popularly called Funky Mallam, who died on Tuesday,  after a long battle with cancer of the colon.
Amego died in his home in the US.
The man  who enjoyed a large following on Facebook while alive  has had his social media account flooded with messages from friends, long time colleagues and fans.
Among them are Blaccky, who wrote, “Thought it was a rumour but behold, my brother, you have departed from this sinful world. This is so painful. Rest in perfect peace, .B.”
Also, Collins Enebeli, father of popular Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy and President of the Artiste Manager Association in Nigeria, has  added his voice,  saying, “The galaxy of stars above welcome yet another star. Memories of the Funky Mallam lives on!”
Another 1990s star,  Mike Okri, expressed shock and sadness over Amego’s demise. Okri, who served as the PMAN second vice president during Amego’s tenure,  described him as a great man.
Amego’s death came just days after he was discharged from the Maryland Medical Center, in Maryland, US, where he was undergoing treatment. Early in the week, his wife, Marie, drew attention to her husband’s health condition in a Facebook post. The couple have a daughter named Fatemma .
Although the late Amego was diagnosed with colon cancer several years ago, the disease spread to other organs in his body three months ago.
According to his wife, doctors at the Maryland Medical Center had disclosed that all the treatment  given might to save his life and said he had just three weeks to live.

Celebrity Confession: Fatherhood has humbled me –Terry G

After brandishing the weirdo image for eight years, the Ginjah Master, Terry G, takes up a new character writes Jayne Augoye
It is normal for an artiste to rebrand at some point in his or her career. For the once self acclaimed Gingah Master, Terry G, real name Oche Amanyi, that time is now.
After serenading fans and flooding the Nigerian music scene with his weird and wild persona, addictive auto-tune laced hits like‘Testing Microphone’ and ‘Free Madness’, the singer, producer and music video director is carving out a new image for himself.
Apart from the fact that he now wishes to be referred to as Honourable Terry G, the Chaante Chante singer now possesses a calmer mien, which is evident in his response and disposition to questions posed to him by this correspondent.
For the 27-year-old singer, who has a son from his lover, Mimi Omoregbe, late last year, it is safe to say that becoming a father for the first time has given him a different outlook  of life.
“Having a kid has a lot to do with it. Sometimes you see life in a different way. You perceive it in another way another time. When I had a kid, I saw so much value in my life and the future. I became humbled and developed the mindset that anything that has to do with my future must automatically involve my son as well. I started changing a lot of things and it actually scared a lot of negative friends from me. It helped me resolve and re-organise myself again.
“In the past,  some children appeared scared to come close to me, but all that has changed. Fatherhood has been awesome, amazing and a miracle to me. My son is my replica.”
Shutting critics who often accuse him of singing ‘meaningless songs that sell nonetheless’, the Benue-State born artiste includes a love song titled ‘Love Affair’ in his recently released fourth album, Book of Ginger .
In the album, the artiste explores a variety of genres, which, he says,  depicts the many sides there are to him, musically and personally. Yet, despite the ‘bold’ move, he reckons that the feedback isn’t too pleasant.
He explains, “It was quite challenging because some people did not actually believe that it is Terry G. They were like: ‘Is this Terry G on the television?’ It was quite a big shock to them and so I got both positive and negative news , but with the negative topping the list.
“It was really shocking to them that I went R ‘n’ B. The romantic side of me has always been there despite the fact that I have been portraying a particular image all the while. In fact,  I used to sing love songs before I discovered the Terry G image. I felt that at this point in my career, I could risk doing something even though love songs are not commercially viable.”
With the new image, Terry G says,  he has been forced to adopt certain lifestyle changes.
“I still party because of what I do; you know our job requires you to party. But I prefer what I am now because I am more coordinated. I strongly believe that it is better to go out for a reason than for nothing,’’ he says excitedly.
During the course of this chat, the singer attempts to clear the air with regards to his controversial album titled‘Terry Gzus’,  which was released in 2011.
According to the artiste who started out singing in his local church choir, the title was only a play on words, with no religious undertone whatsoever.
“With the title, Terry Gzus, I didn’t mean JESUS, I simply mean, GZUS. Because I knew the pronunciation sounded like the Jesus, I already foresaw that it was going to create a huge controversy but that was why I named it that way in the first place. But it was intentional; it means (Terry omo Jesu) and I chose not to say anything because I wanted the buzz,” he explains.
He is also quick to add that while he has gotten used to the controversies that usually trail him, an ‘erroneous’ story of hit-and-run involving him last year, nearly dented his image.
Although he refuted the allegation at the time, he says the damage has already been done.
“When I drive through certain neighbourhoods, people still yell at me, saying, ‘Baba hit and run’. I had nothing to do with the accident because I was in London when it happened.
“It was one of my boys that hit somebody with my car and not me, as reported. He was driving a Black Toyota Camry car when he hit the person and then ran away. Because eye witnesses did not see who the driver of the car was, they assumed it was me; perhaps this was due to my number plate. I had to part with nine hundred thousand naira for the person’s treatment,” He recollects

Health Tips: The Healing Power Of Bitter Kola

Bitter kola is a type of nut mostly found in several parts of Nigeria and West-Central Africa as a whole and the tree grows in the (tropical) rain forests. Its biological name is “Garcinia kola” and it belongs to the family of “Guittiferal”. Bitter Kola has been identified as a potent antibiotic which could be effective in the treatment of many diseases confronting people today.

The fruit, seeds, nuts and bark of the tropical tree have been used for centuries in traditional medicines to treat many forms of ailments. Below are the benefits of Bitter Kola:

Chewing bitter kola relieves coughs, hoarseness, bronchial and throat troubles. Several studies discovered bitter kola to be a remedy for dysentery, osteoarthritis, antidote against poisoning and considered an aphrodisiac.

Improves lung functions
Bitter kola has been used for centuries to treat chest colds in traditional medicine, but research has taken a look and found out why it is effective. A study in the 2009 issue of The Internet Journal of Pulmonary Medicine, performed on mice, reports that Garcinia kola improved respiratory function after 28 days of use of a Garcinia extract. Written by Simon Adekunle of the Ekiti State University in Nigeria, the study shows that Garcinia kola works by dilating the alveolar ducts and sacs in the lungs by improving the strength of the fibers in the lung tissue. Bitter kola’s beneficial lung properties are attributed to its high antioxidant content.

Bitter Kola health benefit for malaria
Considerable experimental studies found the chemical constituents in bitter kola have anti-malaria properties. That aside, traditional healers have, for years, prescribed bitter kola for the treatment of malaria infections.

Researchers who reported that bitter kola had anti-malaria effect in the 2010 issue of Journal of Medicinal Plants Research, from a survey of plants used by traditional healers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, attributed this to its quinones content.

Further more, kolaviron, the powerful chemical compound found in bitter kola, was reportedly tested on a malaria parasite and found to inhibit malarial activity.

Celebrity Interview: I Don't Mind Showing My Body Parts But Not Nude –Actress Ella

Ella Mensah isn’t exactly a household name in Nigeria, but one to reckon with in Ghana, where she plies her trade. She was recently in Nigeria to shoot a film where she met a Vanguard reporter for a chat.

In a space of five years the sexy Thespian has had more than 30 movies in her kitty. In this chat, the sexy Ella talks about herself and what makes her tick. Excerpts:

Tell us about yourself?

I’m Ella Mensah, a Ghanaian actress based in South Africa and Ghana. I’m doing some movie shooting right now in Nigeria. I came here for the first time on October 1st last year, and since then, I have about 30 movies. I’ve been here for a year, but I come and go. So far, I’m loving it.

What has your acting experience been like?
So far, so good. A lot of challenges here and there. When I came back , I had a baby. As a mum, I was a bit fat and it was difficult to get some roles. I had to work on myself, I stopped breastfeeding and all those motherhood things. It took me a year to come back after that three-year break. Now I love every minute of it. It’s like I’m living my dream. This is all I wanted and it’s perfect for me.

Was your mum a single mother?
Yes, I met my dad for the first time when I was nineteen years old. That’s why we don’t have that kind of very close relationship. It was also why I tried to live his dream, be a journalist for him because I wanted him to love me. But I realised that it wasn’t worth it, my mum’s love was okay for me. So what I really plan to do with my team is to open an NGO for single mothers.

Are you married?
I’m not married and I’m not single. I’m in a relationship. Though I’m no longer with my son’s dad. My son and his dad are in South Africa now.

What physical attribute would you say is your selling point?
(Laughs) I heard that word “selling point” for the first time in Nigeria. Most of my friends say it’s my lips and I think it’s true. Then my height, my face and my ass. People are attracted to different things. Personally, I think it’s my face, height and lips.

Would you act nude for any reason?
No, I don’t see why I should. Fine, I don’t mind showing certain parts of my body, especially when playing a seductive role. I can wear a bum short or maybe a net top. But I’ll never go nude, not even for ten million dollars!
