Fela’s Museum Opens


The new Kalakuta Museum 
Fela museum which has been renamed ‘Kalakuta Republic’ Museum on Gbemisola Street, Ikeja, Lagos State Southwest Nigeria, was formally opened today.
The opening ceremony was part of the ongoing Felabration 2012 was performed by Yeni Kuti and an official of the Lagos State government.
The event was tagged soft opening, according to Fela’s daughter, Yeni Kuti.
The museum consists of his bedroom, sitting rooms, photographs, with over 3,000 of Fela’s clothes on display.
She said the hotel  and other aspects of the museum will be commissioned later.
When P.M.NEWS called at the Gbemisola Street home of Fela this morning, the building was painted in white colour.
Yeni said the public will be able to see the last bedsheet Fela used before he died in 1997, his saxophone and others.
Fela’s producer and artist, Lemmy  Gariokwu, the curator of the museum, said by the time other necessary things have been put in place people will be seeing Fela as in his real life.
As at the time of filing this report, a symposium tagged Fela the Great with a topic: “Corruption and Generation Next” was ongoing at NECA House auditorium,  Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Speakers at the symposium include Feti Atta, Ndidi Nwuneli, Supo Sasore, SAN, and Professor Michael Veal. The symposium was moderated by Prince Yemisi Shyllon. Felabration continues tomorrow with a live performance by top Nigerians and foreign stars.
