Armed Robbers kill two policemen in Abule-Egba, Lagos

Suspected armed robbers on Monday morning stormed New Oko-Oba in Ojokoro local council development area of Lagos State killing no fewer than two policemen.

The bloody incident occurred at about 1.00 am, October 8, 2012 at a junction near Olaniyi Street, off Olayiwola Street in the area. The suspected armed robbers were said to have snatched a jeep and were escaping through the Olayiwola axis when they ran into a checkpoint manned by some policemen.

According to an eyewitness account, the men of the underworld attacked the policemen killing one on the spot and chasing the other to a house on Olaniyi street where they riddled a black Cherokee Jeep with bullets, and killed the policeman who was hiding near a disused oil tank near the Jeep.

Reports hinted that a mechanic, who was said to have been hired to repair its wiring system, parked the Jeep there overnight.

Many residents in the area said the robbers, at a point took over the whole area shooting into the air sporadically apparently daring the police to attack them. The shooting was heavy and lasted for about 45 minutes. It was learnt that they used very sophisticated weapons and wore bulletproof vests during the raid.

But the police later raced to the scene after the gunmen had left. They reportedly picked the remains of their fallen colleagues to an undisclosed hospital. Efforts to confirm the report have so far proved abortive.

Few hours before the incident, on Sunday evening, armed robbers snatched a new car at Babs Ogunwole Street, few meters to where Monday’s incident took place.
